Chances of Recovery from Skin Cancer
1. Prognosis
Generally, the prognosis for non-melanoma skin cancer is great. Both squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are highly curable. Virtually no death occurs from basal cell carcinoma and just rare deaths are seen with squamous cell carcinoma skin cancers, mostly in immunosuppressed people. Basing on the treatment option, type and area of skin cancer, the possibility of an earlier skin cancer’s recurrence is as low as 1%-2% for Mohs Surgery and up to 10%-15% for elimination by curettage and electrodessication.
2. Skin Cancer Screening
Skin cancer’s early detection can cause better results. Know your skin and whether you have any spot or mole that is suspicious, visit a dermatologist for a skin cancer screening. Awareness helps detect and treat skin cancers soon.
3. Prevention
If you avoid triggers that lead to tumors to grow, you can prevent many skin cancers. Prevention methods incorporate:
· Having your physician do a yearly skin examination.
· Using a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF daily. Apply it 15-30 minutes before going outside.
· Using protective clothing to cover your skin.
· Doing a self-test of your skin once every month.
· Avoid using tanning beds as they are a basic reason for excessive UV ray exposure.
· Avoiding the sun during the peak hours of 9 am to 4 pm.
· Reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours if you are swimming or sweating a lot.
· Wearing sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection.
